What is the maximum application temperature for Propspeed?

During the application of Propspeed, two important temperature measurements are made. The most important of the two is the air temperature and humidity, the second is the surface temperature of the metal. These two temperatures play a role in the coating window and drying time.
The maximum processing temperature is 35°C / 95°F air temperature and 35°C / 95°F surface temperature.

How long do I have to use the Propspeed etch primer after the hardener has been mixed with the base?

Accepted Answer

After adding the hardener, you have 6 hours to use the catalyzed product. After this time, the product is inactive. Regardless of whether there are still liquids in the can, the product must be discarded after adding the hardener and no longer used when the 6-hour window is reached.
Propspeed products have a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture. The best before date is located on the can of etch primer and the bottle of etch primer hardener.

Why do I have to start with bare metal when applying the Propspeed system?

Accepted Answer

The Propspeed coating is formulated to adhere to a bare metal surface. If an existing coating is painted over, the metal etch primer may not bond properly to the substrate mechanically and chemically when applied over another coating. Existing Propspeed must be completely removed before applying a new coating.

How long is the typical application of Propspeed?

The duration of a Propspeed application depends on (a) how much of the underwater equipment is to be coated (landing gear, propellers, trim tabs, etc.), (b) the size (dimensions) of the surfaces to be coated, (c) the number of people working on the application, and finally (d) the ambient temperatures at the time of application. As you can see, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Can I use acetone to clean the metal?

Accepted Answer

No, acetone is not recommended for 2 important reasons.
(1) Alcohols dissolve a variety of oils and organic contaminants better in comparison.
(2) Alcohols work better because they evaporate more slowly compared to acetone. In practical application, this gives the user enough time to clean the surface and remove all organic contaminants. Acetone evaporates too quickly and does not complete the cleaning process properly. This is especially important in warm and humid temperatures.
 
Propspeed has developed 2 products specifically designed for cleaning and conditioning metal surfaces to be coated with the Propspeed system. 
 
Propclean is a cleaning agent that removes organic oils and other contaminants on the metal surface, ensuring a clean application surface.
 
Propprep is a metal conditioning solution that contains phosphoric acid and a surfactant (soap). The purpose of the surfactant is to clean the metal by helping to remove loose metal dust, dirt, light grease and oils that may be present on the metal surface after grinding and after cleaning with Propclean. The phosphoric acid reacts with the metal surface to form a thin, homogeneous metal phosphate layer over the entire substrate.

Propspeed manufactures 2 products specifically designed for cleaning metal surfaces to be coated with the Propspeed system.
Propclean is a cleaning agent that removes organic oils and other contaminants on the metal surface, ensuring a clean application surface.
 
Propprep is a metal conditioning solution containing phosphoric acid and a surfactant (soap). The role of the surfactant is to perform a pre-cleaning of the metal by helping to remove loose metal dust, dirt, light grease and oils that may be present on the metal surface after grinding and cleaning with Propclean. The phosphoric acid reacts with the metal surface to form a thin, homogeneous metal phosphate layer over the entire substrate. The importance of the phosphate layer can be described as follows:
 
This phosphate layer is porous and forms a matrix to which the corrosion-inhibiting pigments and polymers contained in the etch primer can adhere.
 
The phosphate layer is a transition layer between the metal substrate and the components of the etch primer. In other words, it provides excellent adhesion compatibility that is not present when the etch primer is applied directly to the ground metal.
The phosphate coating is also inherently an anti-corrosion agent that works in conjunction with the etch primer.

Can Propspeed be cleaned with pressure?

Yes, Propspeed can be cleaned with pressure. We recommend holding the tip of the pressure cleaning wand no closer than 15 cm to the painted surface and using only the wide jet when high water pressure is used.

Accepted Answer
